Show Background
What’s the most outrageous title you can think of? One idle conversation in 2001 and a new musical was born! A few months later and Matt Townend and David Massingham, both members of Exeter University’s Footlights society, decided to turn that idea into a reality.
The show is an offbeat comedy with colourful characters and a strong, if slightly silly, storyline. Ideas for the story came from as far afield as Dick Wittington and Faust with influences from classic British comedy such as Blackadder and Monty Python. The music owes much to the great London musicals such as Oliver! and My Fair Lady but also to other classics including Les Miserables, Little Shop Of Horrors and Wicked.
Despite numerous challenges, including working remotely across the Atlantic for six months, the musical was completed after five years and premiered in Edinburgh in 2008 to a great critical response. Plague! has subsequently gone international and has recently had its German premiere thanks to the musical being discovered by the staff at a German school looking for something new to perform. Now Plague is returning to Edinburgh slicker, funnier and deadlier then ever before!
