Introduction

Welcome to the performers’ area for Plague! The Musical. Here you will find all you need to know about casting, rehearsals and performances. First of all, a little word from the writers, Dave and Matt...

We have both long been passionate about original musical theatre, and Plague! is our first collaborative venture. This is a well-funded Fringe production and will be heavily publicised. We have been very fortunate in securing our first-choice theatre in Edinburgh, along with the perfect time slot for our projected audience. In our opinion, C is the best of all the Fringe supervenues: its performance spaces are second to none, and as a base from which to network it is ideal.

As a performer in the show, we will be able to offer you free accommodation in Edinburgh and payment on a profit-share basis. As producers, we will personally make no profit from this production. However, we have great ambitions for the future of this musical, and by securing a part you have the rare opportunity to be the performer who creates a character for the first time.

We hope you find the information here useful and consider joining us for this exciting opportunity!

The Show

Plague! The Musical tells the story of Clive who comes to London to seek his fortune but ends up unleashing the bubonic plague after being seduced by the words of an evil mutant rat. The main website contains both a detailed synopsis and a short synopsis of the story and, in addition, there is some background of some of the key characters and some early recordings of some of the songs (note that some abridgements have been made for the Edinburgh production.)

Plague! is being performed at C venues from Wednesday 30th July - Monday 25th August (Not Monday 11th August). Currently, subject to confirmation, we are expecting to perform in the 144 seat C+1 venue with an evening start time. In London, we will have a preview performance at Questor's Studio Theatre on Thursday 24th - Friday 25th July. We will then travel up to Edinburgh on Saturday 26th July and return on Tuesday 26th August.

There are a multitude of different characters in Plague! and for the Fringe production we will require 11 actors (7 male and 4 female.) Most actors will play two or more characters as well as participate in many chorus roles. For full information, see the parts section below.

The London and Edinburgh performances will be quite ambitious. We have already begun work on our set and costume designs (we have a costume budget alone of £2000) but fortunately, we have already put together an excellent creative team who will help ensure that the show is a great success.

The Deal

For all our actors we will provide:-

  • Accommodation for the duration of the Edinburgh Festival.
  • Transport to and from Edinburgh.
  • Profit share. This is currently expected to be where average audiences exceed 55% but that number could fall with additional sponsorship or could rise with unforeseen expenditure. The final number will be conveyed before we depart for Edinburgh.
  • Your costumes (excluding footwear in most cases.)
  • A very funky, limited edition, Plague! The Musical T-shirt to wear around Edinburgh like a walking billboard.
  • Liability/all risks insurance while performing.
  • Free entry to any C venues show in Edinburgh that has unsold tickets.

From all our actors we will expect:-

  • Commitment. If you're thinking of auditioning then do look at our rehearsal schedule and ensure that you'll be able to make the rehearsals times. We understand that there may be some conflicts and this is fine if we know in advance. We are on a very tight schedule, however, so availability is a key factor in our casting decisions. You MUST be able to make ALL performance dates!!
  • 2 hours of flyering each day in Edinburgh (except Monday 11th August which is a day off for everyone).
  • Help with the maintenance of costumes including ironing and washing. This should not be more than an hour per day.
  • Participation in some publicity events as and when such opportunities arise.
  • Basic makeup and makeup removal materials.

We understand that some actors may want to get part-time jobs in Edinburgh and this should not be a problem as long as you have agreed hours with us so that you can still take part in the above.

Rehearsals

Our provisional rehearsal schedule is shown below. Most rehearsals will take place in London Bridge with the exception of Saturday rehearsals that will take place at Moor Park (Metropolitan Line.) This is because of an excellent facility we have available to us at this location. Most actors will be required for the majority of rehearsals, but if you are not needed we will let you know well in advance - we don't want anyone sitting around kicking their heels!

In addition to the formal rehearsals below we are planning on having an introduction lunch (on us) and a small publicity photo shoot on Sunday 8th June. (NOTE: Date change from original planned date!)
