Her previous relationship with the Pied Piper incites Clive
to jealousy, and the arguments that ensue, not to mention
the outbreak of Plague, tear the lovers asunder. Clive and
Isabella only rekindle their affections on her deathbed in
the song You’re Here.

Death appears early on in
the play in the time-honoured vision of a hooded skeleton
with scythe. However, when the plague begins, Death moves to
confront the cause, Clive Hucklefish, and reveals herself to
be a beautiful woman with a German accent. She is now
thoroughly overworked, and demands that Clive rights his
wrong. She is then hit on by Jerry, who she rebuts. She
returns after Isabella dies in the song You're Here
and in a solo grants the lovers a reprieve and returns
Isabella to life. At the end of the play, she finally
succumbs to Jerry’s dubious charms. |
